Street Children

Human Help Network Rwanda, as well as the Government of Rwanda, does not want children to live in the streets. To deal with this phenomenon, Human Help Network Rwanda supports two street child centres in Rwanda. Workshop for Construction in street child centre supported by HHN One is FIDESCO Rwanda, located in Kigali City. In this centre Human Help Network Rwanda pays school fees and materials for the children. The second one is a centre which Human Help Network Rwanda helped to build up in cooperation with the Caritas Diocese Gikongoro, Nyamagabe District. Its focus is on formal education and vocational training. Besides this support, Human Help Network Rwanda set up three “Listening Points” in Gasarenda, Kitabi and Mushubi where social workers hear the problems of street children and some who dropped out of schools. They convince them to go back to school and, if possible, stay with their families. If necessary, they are taken into the centre for a short while for psycho-social care and returning to school. For those who cannot go to school and those who did not continue with secondary education, the centre offers vocational trainings in carpentry and construction. To make sure their future, Human Help Network Rwanda supports them to set up their own associations by issuing both tools and technical support to become competitive on the local market.

With these efforts, Human Help Network Rwanda hopes to contribute to a better future for Rwanda’s youth.
